Movies based on Mythology give you a sense of fake reality - emphasised on the big screen you always feel like these type of movies would be a fun period to live in, where in reality it couldn't be much further from the truth. Here's a list of my top 10 movies based on Mythology and Fantasy...

Valhalla Rising

Valhalla Rising

Valhalla Rising is a mythology movie based on the Norse, set in 1000 AD the story follows a warrior of supernatural speed and strength, a man named One Eye. In which, yes you guessed it has one eye. Valhalla Rising manages to capture the brutality of that period and also epic movie mythology. Mads Mikkelsen gives an amazing performance as the brutal slayer One Eye.

Clash of the Titans (1981)

Clash of the Titans

The original is a movie I remember as a child, my dad would often watch it on TV. I remember, Lawrence Olivier's performance as Zeus, king of the gods is truly epic. Combining Greek mythology and fantasy the story follows Perseus who's on a quest to save a Princess from both Medusa and the Kraken monster. For me, Clash of the Titans is far better than the remake, the acting and story seems to be more thrilling and captivating. It's a mythology movie that captures greatness.

300

300

300 is the 2006 blockbuster starring Gerard Butler and Lena Headey, which follows King Leonidas into the Battle of Thermopylae, with the aid of 300 Spartan men, they have to fight off the Persian army led by the maniacal Persian King Xerxes. 300 is a movie that is a work of art from start to finish.

Troy

Troy

Troy is an adaptation of great greek mythology, starring Brad Pitt, Brian Cox and Eric Bana and directed by the great Wolfgang Petersen. The movie is about a feud within the city of Troy and centres around the hero Achilles who must choose whether to help the Greeks, a decision which will decide the outcome of the war. For those who haven't seen Troy, it's a brilliant epic movie of mythology and certainly one you should watch at least once.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief

I was a little apprehensive about adding this one to the list as It's not that highly regarded as an epic, however, I did quite enjoy watching it. It was fun and imaginative and a great movie for kids.

It's a movie that introduces kids to Greek mythology in a fun imaginative way. The movie focuses on a boy named PErcy, he's the last descendant of a Greek god, he must with the help of his friends figure out a way to help an imminent war between the gods.

Jason and the Argonauts(1963)

Jason and the Argonauts

Who can forget Jason and the Argonauts? A brilliant epic mythology movie which see's Jason trying to regain his rightful throne in Kingdom of Thessaly. Becoming king isn't an easy task though, he must first find a magical Golden Fleece and fight an evil creature with a head full of seven snakes, not to mention an army of Skeletons. Sounds pretty cool right? Well it certainly is. If ever Hollywood remake this movie, I'll be first in line to watch it.

Ulysses/Ulisse

Ulysses

Starring the brilliant Kirk Douglas, Ulysse's is about a man (Ulysse) who returns from the Trojan Wars, to his home Ithaca to be reunited with his life who thought him to be dead from battle, plenty of adventures await on his return such as fighting an evil Cyclops and escape the spells of a sorcerer who wants him dead (sounds like a pain in the ass, right?).

If you're a fan of Kirk Douglas and Fantasy movies you'll be a fan of this brilliantly underrated movie.

Reign of Fire

Reign of Fire

Reign of Fire isn't really a movie anyone ever thinks of when they think of awesome Fantasy dragon movies. Well for me it is. Starring a younger Christian Bale as the protagonist, who's living in a world full of fire breathing dragons who have taken over the earth, only a few remaining survivors remain, who must fight back and reclaim the planet. Reign of Fire is brilliant, from start to finish and is probably one of few movies that has kick ass acting and dragons in one movie. Look out for a brilliant performance by Matthew McConaughey.

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

Lord of the Rings is Tolkien Mythology and fantasy and has been adapted by the great Peter Jackson into an amazing trilogy. Lord of the Rings has been regarded as one of the best Action Fantasy movies of all time, the adventure see's Frodo, the protagonist on a quest with Hobbits, Dwarves and a Wizard who must leave their homes and venture on a journey to Mount Doom with a simple task of destroying a dark and powerful ring, a ring that if fell into the wrong hands will help unleash the evil Dark Lord Sauron onto the world.

Dragonheart

DragonHeart

How could anyone not love DragonHeart? Starring Dennis Quaid as the dragonslaying knight and Sean Connery's voice as the Dragon. They must team up and stop an evil king who at one time was saved by the Dragon when he was a young boy. The Dragon gave the king part of his heart as long as he promised that when he grows up he would be a man of good honour. Well, the king didn't like that idea and became an evil and cruel ruler (it always turns out that way doesn't it). The king is now trying to destroy all the dragons including Draco.

(Bonus addition) - Krull

Krull

Krull is probably one of my favourite movies of this genre. It's an Action, Adventure and Fantasy all rolled into one...with a little bit of Sci-Fi in there too.The story is about a prince and his friends who must rescue his bride from an evil fortress, who's captured by an evil alien invader. It's about as awesome as a movie can get. The movie stars an awesome bearded Ken Marshall who's just brilliant in this movie. Krull is kind of like one of them movies you've seen as a kid but can't ever remember the name of it. Well lucky for you, now you know.
