Toy Story has probably been regarded as one of the greatest animated movies of all time, period. To say it came out in the infancy of CGI it was truly a testament to the level of character based story they managed to produce, even though it was released in 1995 it still looks visually good, in fact it still looks great... I think the Toy Story franchise has been incredibly successful for people of all ages, I think it's one of them movies that families just enjoy. It gives kids a fantasy world that they can hone into and totally become immersed in.
The Incredibles was great for me it was a movie that got completely swept under the radar until it's release. I think the great thing about The Incredibles is that it keeps the magic alive, a lot of modern day animated movies focus more on the visuals rather than the story telling, I think The Incredibles manages to balance both perfectly. Along with a brilliant story the voice acting is really great, the movie is just fun. Everyone can watch it and be entertained, it's a movie you can put on to for the kids and it will at least keep them quiet for a few hours. Probably one of the best movies for kids, ever!
I think Home Alone has had an impact in almost everyones life. One day Kevin wakes up and his parents are gone, his family are gone and he has the house all to himself, what kind of kid doesn't wish that? So they can have free reign to run around the house making a mess everywhere they turn, throwing their toys trying to boobie trap the house make sure you don't forget to remove the micro machines from under the windowsill.
I am sure a lot of parents have wanted to do this to their kids at one time or another, shrink them matchbox sized so they can't hear them yelling anymore. Well a great alternative to that is to get them to watch Honey, I Shrunk the Kids. It's such a fun movie with a great concept. The idea that a kooky scientist accidentally shrinks his children and they escape into the garden! Let the insanity ensue. Not to mention you're now ant sized you also have to run away from potential predators that might try to kill you! One of them might even be your own dad when you accidentally get trapped in a bowl of cheerios. Oops.
A lot of things a kid really wants is to have his own pet, but what's more awesome than having a Killer Whale as a pet? Well, probably not a lot actually. The best thing about having a pet Whale is that he would be great to go surfing with! Although Free Willy is a fun movie about a young kid just finding a friend in a Whale, it is actually a really great story about friendship and over coming adversities. There's a few heart wrenching moments watching Free Willy but it's definitely a great kids movie.
If E.T wants to phone home, you let him phone home! The pint sized Alien somehow managed to capture the hearts and imaginations from children all over the world. I think at some point everyone wished there was an alien invasion full of little E.T's running about everywhere being all sweet and nice. E.T the Extra-Terrestrial is a masterpiece and was really one of Spielbergs defining moments as a director, at least for me anyway. It's one of those movies that no matter how old it is, it's one of the best kids movies of all time, one kids can sit down, love and wish for their very own Extra-Terrestrial! Just make sure they don't use the phone and try to prank call everyone after watching the movie.
What's more cool for a kid than their own ghost friend? Well, Casper is just that. At least for the people watching the movie. Casper is one of the movies kids are drawn to, at a young age you're always worried about ghosts, goblins and the boogiemen! but this is the kind of movie that makes you think not all ghosts are bad! Especially Casper. He's a friendly ghost, the friendliest ghost of all! After watching this amazing kids movie you'll no doubt be seeing your little ruffian running around with bed sheets over his head pretending to be a ghost.
Unfortunately The NeverEnding Story actually ends, It only goes on for a few hours. But those few hours are actually pretty great. A lot goes in those few hours, one of which involves a flying dragon like dog named Falkor which is probably the most badass dragon dog of all time! This fantasy world is captivating for a young kid, it's imaginative, fun and it's just what cinema is all about.
Kids really love Bugs Bunny and co. They pretty much love Space Jam too. I know why, it's very simple. Because it mixes fantasy and reality, it makes a kid believe that it is possible. That the two worlds really do exist and they co-exist together. Which is sweet, It's one of those movies that emphasises that nothing can beat hard work, when the Monstars steal the powers of the NBA's elite, the Looney Tunes have to do whatever they can do win their Basketball match. It involves trying hard. Very hard....with the help of Michael Jordan of course.
As a kid I think everyone wants to fly (even as an adult!). Everyone wishes they had their own gang of friends who would stick with them through everything! Hook also tells us never to grow up! to stay a kid forever and have great battles with evil pirates! If only life was that simple. Hook is a brilliant movie, It's not too dark and it's not too slapstick either, it has a good medium and emphasises family and it's importance. Hook is a great journey for young or old. Most of all it has magic (or at least fairy dust). Hoffman and Williams are brilliant in Hook. It's truly one of the greatest kids movie of all time.
How can a best kids movie list not include The Goonies? It has action, story, fighting, pirates, gold and buried treasure. What more do kids want? Nothing! The Goonies is a masterpiece, It's one of those movies that you can watch again and again. It mixes fantasy with reality seamlessly and makes you think there might actually be an abandoned pirate ship near you. I guess you could always start off with a metal detector and work yourself up from there. If your kid starts doing the Truffle Shuffle afterwards, don't blame me.
AAARRY BLEEDIN' POTTAH. The Harry Potter franchise came out of no where and sent kids everywhere a little bit mental. Or at least a little bit more mental. For some reason, magic, wizards, children, creatures, castles and trains seem to turn kids into crazed lunatics. To be fair, the Potter franchise is quite great. Every movie is fun and magical and makes you become a fan, even if you really don't want to.
Kids like board games, but only when they're winning. Well Jumanji is a board game but with a little twist. Everything on the board game comes to life! Which is quite a scary thought, whoever invented this game needs their heads examining. However, Jumanji is a great kids movie, it's awesome and fun and kids love it. Robin Williams is his usual quirky self which really makes the movie so much fun. I guess them playing Jumanji is better than them playing with matches.
