The 90s gave birth to a lot of great fun classic movies. The style of filmmaking, acting and the scripts were so different to what they are today, here's a hommage to some of my favourites. Check out the list of classic movies of the 90s below.
All Cohagen had to do was give the little aliens air and be a little bit less of a douche and Quaid might not of made martian soup out of him. In all honesty, Total Recall is one of my favourite 90s movies, it was just an instant classic. I think most of it was down to Arnold Schwarzenegger's portrayal as Quaid and also the amazing directing of Paul Verhoeven. Everything about Total Recall was just really well executed, the great adapted novel of Phillip K Dick kind of helped ... Oh and Sharon Stone looking super hot too.
Fortress is such a classic, although not many people seem to have seen it, it's kind of slipped a little bit under the radar. Which is a shame because it's a movie that's just jam packed full of awesomeness. Fortress stars Christopher Lambert and Kurtwood Smith. Which is set mostly in a futuristic prison! Lambert and his wife are caught at a future emigration point with an illegal baby due to population control (not the brightest of ideas, but don't let that deter you from Fortress' sheer brilliance).
Hackers is one of those movies you watch as a kid and you're instantly like "I want to do that" I think the part where they're pranking everyone from their computers just seemed so cool, this was the early 90s when the reality was mostly completely the opposite to the movie. Hackers stars Johnny Lee Miller and a young (and super hot) Angelina Jolie, which sets the story of a group of cyber punk misfits who are into the world of Hacking. They manage to get their hands on some illegal code that sends an evil system admin on a skateboard and the FBI chasing them down.
independence Day, there are a few things aliens have to realise before they invade earth, first of which is that we have Will Smith and the second is that we are pretty resilient. I think mostly though, the Will Smith thing is enough to scare them off, no one wants to get punched in the face by Will Smith. Independence Day is awesome for a number of reasons, it's a total popcorn movie and Will Smith punches an alien in the face, knocks it out and has to drag it through the desert.
A 90s Van Damme movie is about as kick-ass as you can get, we have a Van Damme in his prime playing the role of a re-animated dead soldier. It's a movie that is definitely deserving of the 'classic movie of the 90s' status. Universal Soldier also stars the awesome Dolph Lundgren playing the antagonist. These are two guys you really wouldn't want to piss off in a bar fight.
Looking back at a movie like Toy Story makes me feel old because I remember the day it was first in the cinema and it had such an amazing buzz around the movie (and in the movie). Even looking back now the CGI animation was brilliant, Pixar did a wonderful job in creating such a brilliant animated movie, which in most peoples opinions is regarded as one of the best animated movies of all time, which is, after all quite a fair statement to make.
Another classic Paul Verhoeven movie, With an alien invasion pending the Starship Troopers have to do battle with futuristic alien bugs that threaten humanity and civilisation as we know it. Starring Casper Van Dien, Denise Richards and Dina Meyer, Starship movies is an awesome futuristic action movie from start to finish! I don't think I could ever get bored watching this movie, also, a watch out for the brilliant performance by Clancy Brown as Sgt. Zim.
Another Jean Claude Van Damme movie, I think Van Damme could probably have an entire list just dedicated to himself and his brilliant array of 90s movies. Timecop is no exception, it's cheesy and brilliant, which is everything that was so great about movies from the 90s. Van Damme seems to be sporting a rather cool mullet too in Timecop, it's worth the watch even if it's just to see that.
Speed is a movie that needs no introduction, if you've seen this little beauty of the 90s you'll no doubt appreciate it for how good it is! Don't get me wrong, it's not going to win any awards or anything but it's a great popcorn flick that you'll just enjoy watching, from start to finish it's non stop excitement and adrenaline, not to mention a really young, hot Sandra Bullock who's just a gem to watch for an hour and a half. Dennis Hopper is the typical crazy bad guy in the movie, but who doesn't love Dennis Hopper.
Tremors is a movie that's just fun. It's a funny great movie, starring Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward. The story see's a couple of small town natives defend themselves against a bunch of creatures that live underground, which kill them one by one. If you haven't seen Tremors, you need to do it pronto, also, while you're at it watch Tremors 2 also!
Terminator 2: Judgement Day was the sequel to the James Cameron smash hit The Terminator. Many were apprehensive about whether or not it could work as a sequel and also whether it could re-create the brilliance of the first movie. Cameron managed to prove all the doubters wrong with Terminator 2: Judgement Day, it's truly a classic, it definitely feels more mainstream than the first movie, however it definitely was more of an action style movie. Arnie was given a much larger speaking role, he was just starting to take the world by storm as the ultimate bad ass, also, the antagonist Robert Patrick was incredible. I don't think Terminator 2: Judgement day would be classed as a 90s classic if it wasn't for him. Terminator 2: Judgement Day is definitely high on the list being a classic movie from the 90s.
While we're on the Arnie bandwagon we may as well post this little beauty, Last Action Hero. Looking back at the movie, it's brilliant, however at the time I don't remember it being so good, I think I was expecting a little more. Now though, I can just accept it for what it was, a great action movie! I think Last Action Hero relates to every movie fan, everyone who just wants to be a part of the movie, subconsciously. Well in Last Action Hero, a young kid gets thrown into a movie starring his favourite action star, Jack Slater.
The movie where Jean-Claude Van Damme plays two roles, himself and his twin. Sounds confusing right? Well it kind of is, but makes sense in the context of the movie. Double Impact is a classic, if you're even just a small fan of Jean-Claude Van Damme Double Impact is a movie that you'll enjoy. It's from the early 90s too so the cheesiness is still there, Double Impact is just a Great fun classic movie from the 90s.
I don't think there could be a fun movie list without listing a few Sylvester Stallone movies, Cliffhanger, in my opinion is one of his best. It's a fun thriller with action thrown in for good measure, It's the kind of movie that is just easy to watch and doesn't require copious amounts of effort to get into and to understand, plus it's all about Sylvester Stallone kicking ass and hanging upside down from mountains, I think that's a perfect blend of awesomeness. Cliffhanger is definitely a classic movie of the 90s.
Lets have another Stallone movie, this time Assassins also starring Antonio Banderas who is truly awesome in this movie, he plays the cool, calculated...wack job Miguel Bain perfectly. Assassins tells the story of a hitman who wants to leave his life of crime, but things wind up a little out of hand when a younger assassin named Bain doesn't like the idea of things working out so smoothly for Robert Rath (Stallone). You need to definitely check out Assassins it's just one great classic movie.
